International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
The statement “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,” appears in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and though the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the document as a “common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations” in 1948, it wasn’t until 1990 that homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder by the World Health Organization. (It did so on 17 May, hence the date of the observance.)

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula
It’s easy to ignore things you don’t know anything about. Obstetric fistula is one of those things. But it’s a devastating childbirth injury to women who experience it, usually fatal to unborn babies (90 per cent of cases end in stillbirth) and – here’s the encouraging news – not only treatable but preventable.

Menstrual Hygiene Day
For some, menstruation may be an inconvenience they don’t give much thought to. But for millions of others, this most natural of reproductive cycle functions can equate to abuse (the onset of menstruation can signal that a girl is ready for marriage and childbearing, even if she is still a child herself); stigma (banished to menstruation huts; barred from sharing meals); missed opportunity (skipping school because of pain and/or lack of personal hygiene products); and loss of dignity (lack of supplies and sanitation in humanitarian settings where even basics like soap and water can be scarce or unavailable.)

International Day for Countering Hate Speech
We have seen the proliferation of hate speech, misinformation and disinformation especially in these COVID-19 times. It’s not retreating but in full assault mode all over the globe. We have seen its deleterious effects. Violence instead of peace. Exclusion, discrimination and deepening inequality instead of inclusion, tolerance and respect and fairness.
